The commercial fabric has changed year after year to cope with the new forms of consumer consumption. Among other things, they have evolved from businesses run by self-employed people to a more corporate model. They too have made the leap to digitalisation.
Euskaraz irakurri: Denda tradizionalak, hybridazioaren bidean
With the rise of the internet in the early 2010s, electronic commerce has become increasingly important in many people’s everyday purchases. In addition, with the pandemic, this trend has increased, which is why large companies have taken the opportunity to invest in online sales technologies. In the case of retail companies, few have managed to jump on the bandwagon, with the largest being those who have most joined this trend.
However, to face competition from department stores and businesses, small stores have made greater use of promotions and offers outside of the “official” sales to attract their customers.
In this way, we can see that the commercial fabric of retail is gradually evolving, moving away from traditional “physical” commerce to more hybrid modalities, with a greater presence on the Internet, both as electronic commerce and on social networks, and flexible, with a greater number of offers and promotions throughout the year.
Transformation of traditional trade
The distribution of the commercial fabric has changed in recent years, as a result of which the more traditional local businesses run by one or two self-employed persons have fallen out of favor with the larger business formulas such as chains, franchises or shopping centres.
For example, the stores are getting larger in size and they employ more people. More and more companies are also opting for the business form, apart from the physical legal form (autonomous).
