More than half of the population of Hego Euskal Herria regularly buys online

Date:

Clothing, footwear and accessories account for almost 68% of online purchases, followed by household items.

More than half of the population of Hego Euskal Herria buy online now on regular basis. The fact that 90% of the population has access to an electronic device increase the number of potential buyers and online shoppers. In addition, consumers are increasingly comfortable with e-commerce and have normalized the digital purchasing process.

The covid-19 pandemic has also boosted this trend towards online shopping. In 2019, only Navarre, Madrid, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands accounted for more than 50% of people buying online. In 2021, all autonomous communities (except the Canary Islands) were over 50%.

In 2022, 57% of the population of Hego Euskal Herria will have made regular online purchases, i.e. at least once every three months, according to data from the recent EITB Data Study on Retail, the Evolution and Trends of Shopping Habits.

This percentage of 57% is far removed from the number of online purchases in countries such as France (66%), Sweden (78%) or Denmark (82%). The reasons explaining the greater online consumption in these countries are that the physical distance between companies is greater, the climate for shopping is less favorable and the habit of “roaming” is not so common. In addition, there is a history of other forms of distance selling such as catalog sales in these countries.

According to the data analyzed in the EITB Data report, the millennial generation is the protagonist of online shopping. Young people between the ages of 25 and 44 buy more often on digital platforms. Nearly 78% say they are a regular buyer or purchaser.

Which products do we buy online?

Clothing, footwear and accessories in particular stand out, followed at a distance by household items (tableware, furniture or toys), sports equipment, personal care and hygiene, food and electronic equipment.
