Police confirmed that the boy and girl were involved in a house fire over the weekend. An ambulance was called immediately on Friday 8 April at 20:00.
It happened at Crescent Crescent, Preston, Lancashire. Firefighters and police were called and informed that people were trapped in the house.
The mother and her two children were rescued and taken to hospital. A 20-year-old mother was said to have been mortally wounded.
Her two children, a five-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, died tragically after the medical intervention was called off yesterday. The file will be delivered to HM Coroner in due course, LancsLive reports.
A police spokesperson said: “Our thoughts are with their loved ones at this very difficult time. The children’s families continue to be assisted by specially trained agents.”
A joint investigation between the Lancashire Consulate and the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is underway to determine the cause of the fire. A 24-year-old man has been released for endangering his life after an investigation. He has now been released without any further action being taken.
Det Ch Insp Rach Higgson, a member of the Force Major investigation team said: “As a result of this tragic accident, two children unfortunately lost their lives, and my thoughts go, first and foremost, to their loved ones. Our investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing.”
