Known as the ‘singing nun’, Italian nun Cristina Scuccia, winner of The Voice Of Italy 2014, has decided to take a new path in life. The 35-year-old announced that she was leaving her Ursuline order because she wanted to continue with music.
“Looking back, I look back on my journey with a deep sense of gratitude,” said Cristina Scuccia, who was a guest on Canale 5’s talk show Verissimo: “Change is a sign of evolution, but it’s always scary, because it’s easier to anchor yourself in your certainties than to question yourself. Is there such a thing as right or wrong? I believe it takes courage to listen to your heart.”
Born in Sicily, she has no intention of giving up her journey of faith. She is grateful for everything she has experienced so far.
Nun continued with “Livin’ on a Prayer.”
After her first appearance on Italian television in “The Voice Of Italy” in 2014, “Suor Cristina”, as she is called in Italian, became a star within a few days. Cheered on by other nuns, she sang Alicia Keys’ “No One” and Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” – drawing thunderous applause from the audience and the astonishment of the judges.
The video of their first performance alone was clicked millions of times on YouTube. Cristina continued one round week after week and in the end she was declared the winner by about two-thirds of the audience.
From rebel to nun
Scuccia becoming Sister Cristina was anything but destined. As a teenager, she rebelled against the belief that “I was angry with the Lord,” the 25-year-old told Catholic magazine Credere. She applied to two talent shows, but in vain. She then embodied the 16th-century founder of the Ursuline Order, Angela Merici, in a musical. Moved by her sister’s life, Sucia decided to become a nun.
