Here’s how you can figure out which devices are skyrocketing your bill and use this information to save more

One way to find out at what time of day you use more electricity is to monitor your electricity consumption in real time. This way you find out which devices make your bill skyrocket and you can use this information to save money at home. The major electricity distributors have this online service, but to access this data you must have a smart meter.

This simple online tool is very useful as inflation hits the domestic economy. The increase in energy prices is one of the reasons why food has risen and groceries have become increasingly expensive. Consumers are looking for methods and tricks to save at home. And efforts to reduce household expenses are focused on the electricity bill.

Once you have verified that you have an electricity meter in your home, you can monitor electricity consumption. To access their website you need to know who your distributor is. You can check this information on your electricity bill that arrives in your mailbox. But first it is important to distinguish between the marketer and the distributor.

– Distributor. The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) explains that it is responsible for bringing electricity to the home and that it is not a company that consumers can choose because they are based in geographical areas. It is also responsible for keeping the power lines in good condition. In this case, it is the government that determines how much the distributor should charge to do that work. That amount, the so-called access fee, is part of the fee.

– Marketer. It is a commercial agent that buys and sells energy to its customers. You sign the delivery contract with her and agree on the rate. Therefore, the marketer is the one who pays you the bills that arrive at your home. In this case, you can choose and change the company whenever you want.

Customers have a trading company and a distributor. To obtain information about invoices and offers, to carry out procedures related to payments or to change ownership, you must contact the marketer. Instead, the distributor is contacted in the event of a power outage, you want electricity in a new home, fraud or anomalies are detected, or to access all meter information.

Since the electricity consumption consultation service is provided by the distributor, so you need to know what yours is. Although they are identified in a very similar way, the sender that shows up on the electricity bill is the marketer. Therefore, to know the name of your distributor, you need to look at the Universal Supply Point Code (CUPS). It’s a combination of 20 or 22 digits, although you’re interested in seeing the first 4 digits.

Check on your electricity bill if the number corresponds to one of the codes of the 4 main distributors in Spain:

– I-DE (Iberdrola group): ES0021

– UFD (nature): ES0022/ ES0390/ ES0397

– e-distribution (Endesa): ES0023/ES0024/ES0029/ES0288/ES0363/ES0396

– E-networks (EDP): ES0026

To check your electricity consumption, you must log in to your account and be registered on your distributor’s website. It’s a simple process, but it requires waiting two days to confirm registration. This is the information you need to register with the 4 main distributors:

– Endesa: provide your personal and address details, DNI/NIE/passport, e-mail address and telephone number.

– Iberdrola: email, contact number and the CUPS code found on an electricity bill.

– Fenosa: personal data, DNI/NIE/passport and e-mail.

– EDP: DNI/NIE/passport, CUPS code, email and phone number.

After registering and waiting for the legal confirmation time, you can log in and check your electricity consumption. Each distributor has its own access to the consultation service. Within your personal account you have the option to see in real time what you are doing at home regarding power consumption. If you have connected the washing machine or dishwasher at that time, you can see how much each device consumes. Some data you can use to reduce your expenses and save at home. In your profile you can also access other useful information to know your consumption habits, such as the maximum contracted power or the overview of what you consume every hour.
