The quake shook Java, the main island of the Asian archipelago
At least 50 people lost their lives and another 300 were injured in an earthquake that shook Java, Indonesia’s main island, on Monday, a local official from the hardest-hit city told the press.
“The information I have so far, only in this hospital, is about fifty deaths and that at least three hundred people are being cared for. Most of them have fractures from being trapped in the ruins of the buildings,” Herman Suherman, Cianjur’s administrative manager, told Metro TV.
Cianjur is located about 110 kilometers southeast of the capital Jakarta.
The quake’s epicenter was recorded near this city, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which determined the quake had a magnitude of 5.4 degrees on the Richter scale.
The shock was also felt in Jakarta, but no casualties or significant damage were reported so far.
Several people ran out of the buildings. Mayadita Waluyo, a 22-year-old lawyer, described the panic of the workers running for the emergency exits. “I was working when the ground shook. I could clearly feel the shock,” he said.
Indonesia often records earthquakes because it is in the Pacific Ocean’s “ring of fire”.
