An earthquake on Java, Indonesia’s main island, killed more than 40 people and injured hundreds more on Monday. “Hundreds, maybe thousands of houses were destroyed,” said the spokesman for the city council of the hardest-hit city of Cianjur. The US Earthquake Monitor (USGS) gave the magnitude of the earthquake as 5.6.
The earthquake occurred on Monday near the capital Jakarta on the island of Java. The epicenter was a few kilometers southwest of the city of Cianjur. City chief Herman Suherman said on Monday that, according to his information, nearly 20 people have died and at least 300 have been injured in one hospital alone.
High-rise buildings swayed
The quakes also shook tall buildings in the capital Jakarta, some 100 kilometers to the south. People ran out in panic, but there were initially no reports of major damage or injuries from the capital.
Aftershock warning
The Indonesian Meteorological Agency warned people in the hardest-hit region of aftershocks. They should stay outside for now, said Dwikorita Karnawati, head of the agency.
Many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions
Due to Indonesia’s location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common in the Southeast Asian country. In January last year, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, killing more than 100 people. Thousands of people lost their homes.
