The flagship ‘Moskva’ was hit by Ukrainian ‘Neptune’ missiles, causing “a heavy fire and the subsequent explosion of ammunition”, although the 510 crew members were evacuated in time, Russia’s defense ministry said.
Ukrainian armed forces claim to have hit Russia’s flagship ‘Moskva’, a missile cruiser operating in the Black Sea.
Ukrainian military sources claim to have attacked the ship with ‘Neptune’ missiles, causing extensive damage. The Russian Defense Ministry has reported that the warship sustained “serious damage”, although the 510 people on board have been evacuated.
According to the Russian agency TASS, the Ministry of Defense confirms that after the impact of the missiles, “a heavy fire” developed that detonated some of the ammunition.
The Russian authorities, who have not clarified the location of the ship or the type of ammunition, have launched an investigation to determine the origin of the fire, the Russian newspaper ‘Kommersant’ reported.
‘Moskva’ is the flagship of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea. It was put into service in 1983 under the name ‘Gloria’. In 1996 the cruiser got its current name. The ship’s main assault armament is 16 P-1000 Vulkan rocket launchers.
