According to media reports, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is threatening further fines for violating self-imposed corona rules. The newspapers “Daily Mirror” and “Guardian” wrote on Thursday that the head of government would receive three more sentences. Tory MP Tobias Ellwood expects four more sentences, he told the BBC.
In fact, according to information from The Times, Johnson’s team considers penalties for all six lockdown meetings in which the prime minister has participated as “inevitable”. Experts believe thousands of pounds in fines will be imposed if the amount doubles for each subsequent violation.
Johnson does not want to resign
On Tuesday, Johnson’s office announced that he had been fined and paid for a surprise party at his official residence on his birthday on June 19, 2020. He is the first prime minister to break the law while in office. Still, the 57-year-old does not want to resign and has the support of large parts of his Conservative Party.
On Times Radio, cabinet member Simon Hart ruled out Johnson’s resignation even as London police imposed several sentences on the prime minister. “I don’t see any difference between one or two (punishments), the principle is the same,” Hart said. There should be no additional punishment in the form of dismissal for people who hold public office. However, three Tory MPs have now joined the opposition’s call for his resignation. In addition, Justice Minister David Wolfson has resigned. Wolfson said he had no choice because the scale of the “Partygate” affair and Johnson’s behavior were incompatible with the rule of law.
