SS past – great excitement about the name of the stadium in Kapfenberg

Date:

The Franz Fekete stadium in Kapfenberg has been home to many athletes for years – including the second division football team KSV. Since 2001, the stadium has been named after former mayor Franz Fekete. However, according to an article in the “Standard”, the SS past of the deceased politician is now being discussed and thus a renaming of the stadium. The Bundesliga has already responded.

The Bundesliga immediately responded to the article and issued a statement:

“I will not use names from now on”
“The Austrian Football Association and the Austrian Football Association were informed today by a media article that the namesake of the Franz Fekete stadium was a member of the SS from 1939. Although the Bundesliga and the ÖFB cannot change the name of the stadium , they will stop using the name with immediate effect and will refer to the “Stadion Kapfenberg” in future championships, in the cup and on all channels. Furthermore, the Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW) will be contacted to investigate the naming of other Austrian stadiums.”

It is clear that the topic will also be discussed in Styria in the coming days.
