Expert on Qatar World Cup: – ‘Healthy people come home with the coffin’

Date:

The World Cup in Qatar has brought the human rights issue into the media. They were also discussed in asylum policy, when many ÖVP politicians spoke out in favor of revising the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). “It’s embarrassing to see here,” said Annemarie Schlack, general director of Amnesty International Austria, in view of the refugee shelter. And about Qatar: “Healthy people come home with the coffin.” In the live talk with moderator Conny Winiwarter, she calls on FIFA for a “minimal degree of financial justice”. In figures, that is 440 million euros in compensation.

“It’s not about the number of refugees, it’s about how they are received,” Schlack clarifies about asylum policy. So it would be more of a “housing crisis” than a refugee crisis. The reason was quickly found: the federal and state governments were “mismanaged”. Schlack summed it up with the words “It’s embarrassing to watch this.”

Moldy housing and 16-hour days
Ten of them in moldy accommodation and only a thin curtain for their own privacy: these conditions were the daily bread for the migrant workers in Qatar. “People had to work anywhere, up to 16 hours a day in 34-degree temperatures,” says Schlack. Women, who mainly work as housekeepers in Qatar, would not have had a day off for weeks.

“Healthy people come home with the coffin”
One thing is clear: there have been deaths during the construction work for the stadiums in Qatar. How much is unclear. According to Amnesty, this is also the “real scandal”: there are countless numbers circulating, none of which seem to be correct. FIFA itself speaks of only three deaths since construction began in 2010. “That’s ridiculous,” says Schlack. But the fact is: “Healthy people come home with the coffin” – leaving their wives and children with a mountain of debt. Namely the one that almost all migrant workers had to take with them for their trip to Qatar – in the hope that things would get better afterwards. But fair labor conditions and reforms exist in Qatar. “But only on paper,” Schlack clarifies.

‘Demands 440 million euros in compensation from FIFA’
There are clear demands that Amnesty International Austria is fighting for under the leadership of Annemarie Schlack: “I expect that FIFA and Gianni Infantino will finally look at themselves and find their conscience!” signed by Amnesty International. FIFA is making 440 million euros available for this. “A minimum of justice,” says Schlack.
