The new 2023 motorway vignette has been available throughout Austria since Tuesday. Like the digital version, it is only valid from December 1. The sticker is purple this time and costs 96.40 euros (cars) or 38.20 euros (motorcycles) for a year.
That means that the price for 2023 has increased by 2.8 percent compared to the previous year. Other variants are the ten-day vignette for 9.90 euros (car) or 5.80 euros (motorcycle) and the two-month vignette. The latter costs 29 or 14.50 euros. In Austria, vignettes are not only compulsory for cars and motorcycles, but also for light mobile homes.
Old vignette valid until January 31
The old vignette in the color apricot is still valid until January 31, 2023. Exactly one year later, the new adhesive vignette expires. For example, it is available at toll stations, ÖMTC, ARBÖ, ADAC and at selected tobacconists and gas stations. Since November 3, customers can also buy the digital version there, which accounts for the majority (67 percent) of all annual vignettes. For online purchases, it is only valid 18 days later.
Visible on the edge of the windshield
Road users must place the sticker in a clearly visible spot on the left edge of the windscreen or behind the rear-view mirror. “When the new vignette is applied, the windscreen must be clean, dry and free of grease. At temperatures below five degrees Celsius, the vignette cannot have a good grip. If it comes loose and gets damaged in the process, it is invalid,” emphasizes ÖAMTC lawyer Ursula Zelenka.
Anyone caught without a valid vignette must pay a fine of 120 euros. This is intended as a replacement toll payment. To ensure that the vignette is not damaged when it is stuck, Zelenka recommends attaching it in the garage or after a long journey. The window is then “pre-heated”.
The carrier foil with the serial number serves as proof of purchase and must be kept. This allows customers to request a replacement vignette if necessary.
