The asylum storm also presents the authorities in Lower Austria with major challenges. Not only corona cases, but also diphtheria cases have increased in police waiting rooms and in asylum seekers’ centres. What a lack of hygiene standards could have to do with the spread of the infectious disease and how to prevent further cases.
As reported, there are only eight showers and toilets for every 300 asylum seekers in Frankenburg in Upper Austria. In Carinthia, a registration office for asylum seekers recently had to be converted into an emergency shelter. The Lower Austrian care institutions are also occupied to the last place. According to the Federal Agency for Care and Support Services (BBU), 2,218 people are currently housed in the three first reception centers in Traiskirchen, Schwechat and at the airport. “The entire infrastructure is heavily loaded,” explains a spokesperson for the agency.
