Pediatrician Georg Maiwald demands that politicians finally recognize the signs of the times to get panel doctors. Because as it is now, it won’t be long before pediatrics dies.
Georg Maiwald runs one of Vienna’s 76 cash registers for children – in the Großfeldsiedlung in the 21st district. “I treat up to 150 small patients a day,” he says when he visits the “Krone”. Only a few minutes are left per child.
After all, there is often a queue at the entrance. Parents with children in need of care. “I try to treat every patient to the best of my knowledge and belief, but I am not a pleasant doctor. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on sensitive moments in a family,” he says. Time does not permit.
“I am one of the few possessed”
Why is he still doing this? “I’m one of the few possessed,” says Maiwald. In the last quarter he treated 2034 patients.
In addition to the treatment and medication, he must also do the documentation. Because this is the only way the modest salary of the health insurer will be paid at all. Maiwald: “You have to know up to 100 numbers of each health insurer by heart.” You don’t ask that of an ordination assistant.
Young doctors no longer work 50 hours a week
The former hospital doctor criticizes the health network and the ministry. “They have to recognize the changes in society,” says Maiwald. Young doctors would no longer want to dedicate 50 hours a week.
If you don’t change anything, soon there won’t be any panel doctors. “I just want pediatrics to survive.”
