France has banned short regional flights as long as there is an alternative train that takes less than two and a half hours. This measure was taken with the aim of combating climate change and reducing carbon emissions from air transport.
The decree, included in the Climate Act approved in August 2021, states that the alternative train journey must have “sufficient frequencies and adequate timetables”. In addition, the train service’s route must be operated between stations serving the same cities as the airports it replaces.
France’s transport minister welcomed the move, calling it an “essential step” towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Despite this, the measure has also drawn criticism. More specifically, the International Air Transport Association has described the measure as “absurd” and states that it will have “minimal effects” on carbon emissions.
