Seven people dead – Walmart team leader shot and killed six employees

Date:

At a Walmart supermarket in the city of Chesapeake, Virginia, seven people were shot dead and several others injured late Tuesday night, krone.at reports. According to the Washington Post, the perpetrator was the night shift team leader at the huge supermarket.

East Coast city police chief Mark Solesky said at a news conference Wednesday that the alleged perpetrator was an employee of the supermarket chain Walmart. The 31-year-old man committed suicide with a firearm after the crime.

Shot at staff in break room
American media, citing investigators, reported that the perpetrator had shot at his victims in a break room. Solesky said four more people were treated in hospital for injuries on Wednesday. According to the Washington Post, the perpetrator was a night shift shift manager. In this capacity, he would have supervised the employees who stock the shelves at night.

The incident happened two days before Thanksgiving, when many people were shopping for the holiday that is so important in the United States. At 10:12 p.m. (local time), police were alerted to a gunshot at a Walmart supercenter, police spokesman Leo Kosinski said.

Upon entering the building, officials found “several dead and several injured”. Since this is a very big problem, the search for other possible victims initially continued. Photos and videos showed dozens of police cars and ambulances in front of the mall.

Senator: “Gun Violence Epidemic”
Chesapeake Senator Louise Lucas of the Democratic Party called on Twitter for an end to the “epidemic of gun violence” in the United States. A shooting at a nightclub in Colorado this weekend killed five people and injured 18 others. The week before, a student shot and killed three other students on the campus of the University of Virginia.

The US has long struggled with mass gun violence. Firearms are often readily available in the country. According to the latest data from the CDC health authority, about 20,000 people were shot dead in the US alone in 2020 — more than 50 a day.
