Trieste has taken first place in the ranking of European cities for 2022, drawn up by the Commission of the British Academy of Urbanism. The award ceremony took place in London on Wednesday evening. The former Habsburg port city for Malaga in Spain and Mechelen in Belgium received the coveted prize.
In September, the jury came to Trieste to evaluate the city over two days based on several criteria: quality of municipal administration, identity and culture, quality of life, economy and favorable environment for wealth creation and distribution, environmental sustainability, community, health and wellness and connectivity.
Great joy in Trieste
For Trieste Deputy Mayor Serena Tonel, who attended the ceremony in London, the victory is “further international recognition of the work we do for Trieste’s quality of life, economic and cultural growth, development and sustainability”.
It is a new “success for the whole community of Trieste”.
The Academy of Urbanism is a network of European environmentalists who vote each year for the best squares, streets, neighborhoods and cities in Britain and Ireland. Another award category is “Europe’s best city”.
