Good luck for the police detectives: after 15 years, the death of a then 23-year-old Chechen in 2007 in the Helenental Valley in Lower Austria could be clarified. The victim was killed by three shots in the parking lot of an asylum seekers center. Now the alleged perpetrator could be found. His motive: he felt his honor had been seriously violated.

The file was reviewed again at the beginning of this year. Investigations followed, interviews with informants and again witnesses were questioned. The detectives thus tracked down a then 29-year-old compatriot of the victim – and were then able to convict him, mainly through witness statements that clearly accuse him as a suspect.
Damaged honor as a motive for murder
The motive for the act could also be clarified: the suspect’s damaged honor. This had been inferior to his later victim in several physical altercations. The then 29-year-old could not accept this, the police reported on Thursday.
Also then under suspicion, but no evidence
The alleged perpetrator has been in his home country for some time. The public prosecutor’s office in Wiener Neustadt has issued a national and European arrest warrant. The man was already a suspect in 2007 and turned himself in on May 20 to the police of the state of Salzburg. However, he denied any involvement in the crime.
There were no traces at the crime scene incriminating the man – for this reason, the Chechen was released due to lack of evidence, Roland Scherscher, head of the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counter-Terrorism (LVT) Lower Austria, said on Thursday at the request of the APA.

A side note: According to the State Police Directorate, the reason for the resumption of the investigation by the National Criminal Investigation Service of Lower Austria was the clarification of the Gerasdorf murder case in 2020 by the LVT.
