Numerous offspring were born in the 270th anniversary year at Schönbrunn Zoo. In addition to arctic wolves, capybaras and zebras, king and rockhopper penguins and maned seals, for example, produced adorable offspring.
“Two squirrel monkeys have been born in recent weeks – they are our newest offspring,” says zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck.
“Breeding Highlights of the Year”
The rare and endangered Mhorr gazelle gave birth to two young this year. “But our breeding highlights of the year are definitely the young orangutans, giraffes and now again the koalas,” said Hering-Hagenbeck.
European breeding program for nature conservation
“Conservation breeding is a central task of modern and scientifically managed zoos to maintain populations of endangered species,” says Hering-Hagenbeck. The rearing of the animals took place partly in the context of a European conservation breeding programme.
