Heavy storms raged in central and southern Italy on Saturday: on the island of Ischia in the Gulf of Naples, houses were swept away by a landslide, five people – including a newborn child – are now missing.

Cars washed into the sea
The landslide also tore some parked cars into the sea. A man was rescued from the mud. The population was asked by the authorities not to leave their homes in order not to hinder the rescue work. Almost the entire neighborhood of Casamicciola was closed to traffic. Firefighters and rescue teams were dispatched from Naples to clear the streets.
Ischia is the largest island in the Gulf of Naples, which also includes Capri and Procida. The 46 square kilometer island of volcanic origin has 62,000 inhabitants and is divided into six municipalities.
