Former British Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling has died, the British news agency PA reported on Thursday, citing a spokesman for the Labor politician’s family. Darling died after a short illness in a cancer ward in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was 70 years old.
Darling was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2007 to 2010 under Labor Prime Minister Gordon Brown (who paid tribute to the late on Platform and served under Labor Prime Minister Tony Blair).
Success in the Scottish independence referendum
After Brown’s term ended and there was a change of government in 2010, Darling campaigned for Scotland to remain in the United Kingdom. He was considered a key figure in the ‘Better Together’ campaign during the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. At the time, the majority of voters in Scotland were against the secession of their part of the country.
