An Iraqi who fled to Sweden and publicly burned several copies of the Koran last year should actually be deported. Ultimately, an administrative court formally confirmed the man’s deportation. However, out of concern for his safety, he has been allowed to remain in the country.
The Iraqi has been given a temporary residence permit. The decision by the immigration service Migrationsverket to revoke the Iraqi resident’s originally granted residence permit and refugee status was legal, the administrative court in Stockholm said on Wednesday.
Iraqis deliberately provided false information during asylum checks
It is believed that the man was involved in serious crimes. According to the court, the immigration authorities have sufficiently proven that the man knowingly provided false information and omitted important information during the asylum check. His residence permit was therefore issued for false reasons.
However, due to his activities in Sweden, it is currently too dangerous for the man to return to Iraq. That’s why it can’t be returned in the first place. He will therefore receive a temporary residence permit. However, according to immigration authorities, his crimes were so serious that he could not be granted refugee protection again.
Protests in Muslim countries
The Iraqi’s activities had provoked angry reactions in Muslim countries. As a result, Sweden faced serious diplomatic tensions with several countries. Investigations into possible incitement against the man were also conducted in Sweden.
