The heavy rainfall triggered an avalanche that engulfed a house on the island of Ischia
According to local media reports, at least eight people were killed and several more missing this Saturday as a result of a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall on the Italian island of Ischia (south).
In Casamicciola Terme, in the north of the island, “a house has been engulfed by a landslide and a search is underway for possible missing persons,” the fire service said.
The ANSA and AGI news agencies later reported that thirteen people were missing following the landslide, which occurred early Saturday.
The victims include a couple and their newborn son, who, according to ANSA, lived near where the avalanche started.
The mud also swept away several cars and dragged at least one into the sea. According to the fire service, two people were saved.
Authorities have urged residents of Ischia, off the coast of Naples, to stay in their homes so as not to hinder rescue efforts.
In Casamicciola Terme there was an earthquake in 2017 that killed two people.
