Greed as motive – 21-year-old murder returns to court

Date:

More than 20 years ago, an Italian was the victim of a brutal crime in Styria. The man was shot and stabbed by two perpetrators on a remote trail. Apparently on behalf of the Italian’s lover, who apparently had paid more attention to the man’s money, now owns a beauty clinic. From January 23, the murder case will be heard for the second time at the Graz Criminal Court.

In 1999, the later murder victim fell in love with a Slovakian woman. The prosecutor suspected that she was more interested in the Italian’s money in the 2019 trial. The man in love paid and paid, although his money soon ran out. But the woman kept asking for more, and eventually he even took out a life insurance policy for her daughter and also financed an apartment.

But he was not allowed to move in there and at some point it was enough for him. He threatened to report fraud. The woman then apparently wanted to get rid of the man. An acquaintance of the Slovak would have forged a plan in 2001 to lure the man to Styria. And was met there by two men who killed him. At the crime scene however, there were no useful leads, so the matter lay dormant.

Two convictions in 2019
It was not until 2015 that two witnesses in Slovakia who knew something about the crime came forward and the investigation resumed. In addition to the alleged client, the acquaintance of the woman and the two direct perpetrators, the detectives always had four people in mind. All four people were also charged in Graz, but only two appeared at the 2019 trial. They were eventually sentenced to 17 and 18 years in prison for murder.

In the fall of 2022, the Slovak and the alleged second direct perpetrator were extradited. The two will face a jury from January 23. For now, four lawsuits are scheduled and a ruling is expected in early February.
