As winter approaches, European People’s Party (EPP) leader Manfred Weber has called on EU member states to show more solidarity in hosting Ukrainian refugees. “If more Ukrainians are forced to flee by Russian bombings and attacks during the winter, Western Europe will have to take more responsibility,” said the CSU politician.
This “unprecedented challenge” must be “borne in solidarity by all EU countries,” Weber told the “Bild am Sonntag”. EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson described solidarity between EU states as “intense”. Member States that still have capacity are “clearly stepping up their efforts to help Member States that have capacity,” Johansson said.
According to Johansson, Ukrainians have equal access to social security systems across the EU. However, in the past nine months, they have mainly gone where they have friends or family. The EU is currently stepping up efforts “in coordination with member states” to prepare for winter and possible new arrivals, Johansson said.
7.6 million refugees from Ukraine
Since the beginning of the Russian offensive war against Ukraine on February 24, more than 7.6 million Ukrainian refugees have been registered across Europe. There are also nearly seven million internally displaced persons in Ukraine, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
