Strange scenes on Sunday evening in Graz-Andritz: several circus animals broke out of their enclosures and roamed around, even the police had to leave. The good news: all the animals were recaptured and returned to the circus unharmed.
Many drivers were amazed on Sunday evening: suddenly camels, donkeys, alpacas and goats were walking on the Weinzöttlstraße. “Several phone calls have come in at the Andritz police station,” police spokesman Heimo Kohlbacher confirmed the animal incident. The home of the four-legged friends is actually the Circus Safari, which opens its doors in Graz on December 22.
Smart donkeys
“We set up the shed on Sunday. One of the employees must have made a mistake with the fence,” suspects circus director Benjamin Spindler. “Although you have to say that our donkeys are very smart and apparently somehow managed to open the double-secured gate.” At least the animals used this “invitation” for a leisurely walk. Fortunately nothing happened. “Our employees and some friendly passers-by were able to catch them quickly and everyone is safe and sound at home,” Spindler can now laugh again.
By the way, you can experience the escaped animals in their “orbit” again from December 22, when the big Christmas show of the Circus Safari starts.
VGT demands ban on animals
There is strong criticism from the Association Against Animal Factories (VGT): “It is not the first time that animals have escaped from the circus safari and run onto the road. The circus is legally obliged to keep the animals in such a way that they can do no harm. But here the well-being of animals and people is being played very negligently,” explains Heidi Lacroux. “It is almost impossible to imagine what can happen if the animals cross the street in the dark and are overlooked!” The VGT demands that animals be banned from performing in this circus.
