A house fire raged in the center of Güssing on Thursday evening. For an 80-year-old single woman, all help came too late. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
On St. Stephen’s Day, a neighbor noticed the smell of fire coming from one of the apartments in the stairwell of a residential complex in Güssing around 9 p.m. He immediately calls the police. A member of the Güssing city fire brigade, who lived across the street, immediately informed his comrades and confirmed the fire.
Shortly after arriving, emergency services began extinguishing the fire and searching for people in the building using heavy breathing equipment. An 80-year-old woman was quickly located and brought out. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, her life could not be saved.
A total of four fire brigade respiratory protection teams were deployed to bring the fire under control. Eight other people were also evacuated from the building. A firefighter was slightly injured during the extinguishing work. In addition to the fire brigade, the Red Cross, the police and the fire brigade were also on site. The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing. The Güssing fire brigade was on duty with 35 members and all vehicles.
