Applies from 1 January 2024 – Goodbye GIS fee: ORF will cost us in the future

Date:

Now the cat is out of the bag: from January 1, 2024, an ORF contribution will replace the old GIS rate! The turquoise-green coalition announced this on Thursday afternoon (PK currently in the live stream above). In the future, the contribution without state taxes will be around EUR 15 per principal residence (instead of EUR 22.45 previously).

Pure secondary homes are excluded from the ORF amount. Those who were previously exempt from the AIV will no longer have to pay the new amount in the future. The new regulation became necessary because the VfGH decision of 30 June 2022 states that the free reception of ORF programs via the internet is unconstitutional.

“The savings are around 30% in all states”
According to the coalition, the new ORF contribution will provide a significant benefit to the 3.2 million fee payers. “The savingsthat arise compared to the status quo amount to about 30 percent in all federal states,” emphasizes media minister Susanne Raab (ÖVP).

“We have now agreed an ORF contribution with the coalition partner for ORF funding. Without state taxes, this will be around 15 euros instead of the previous 22.45. This results in a substantial ORF discount and in the future Austrians will have to pay considerably less for ORF than before. 90 percent of people are noticeably relieved,” says Raab.

ORF privileges in government focus
In addition to the austerity package at ORF amounting to 325 million euros, according to Raab, enormous privileges at ORF – especially with old contracts – are being tackled (think of special pensions, special allowances such as a rent allowance of around 120 euros – 15 times a year).

“At the same time, taxpayers need to know what their money is being used for. Therefore, the reporting obligations are standardized in the ORF. In the future, for example, ancillary positions and allowances must be made public,” Raab assured.
