According to media reports, signposts to bomb shelters have been put up in several Russian cities against the background of the offensive war that Moscow had started in Ukraine. Regions near the Ukrainian border are particularly affected by this official measure. In Rostov-on-Don, for example, such a signpost was set up in the city center, according to various independent Russian media. There are similar reports from the cities of Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk.
In Belgorod, which is about 40 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, 700 such signs are to be installed by the end of November. The city of 350,000 inhabitants has been shelled several times since the beginning of the war. Russia blames Ukraine, which usually does not respond to the accusations.
Air raid shelter since August
In the western Russian regional capital of Bryansk, the first cellars have been designated as shelters since August, according to reports, as has the small town of Klintsy in the same area.
Fortifications on the border with Ukraine have also recently been built in the Belgorod region. According to Russia expert Alexander Dubowy, not so much to actually repel an attack, but rather to swear the population into a longer war. The signposts to bomb shelters should now have a similar background.
Signposts far away from Ukraine
Because not only cities in Russia near the border are taking precautions. In Vyshny Volochyok, 250 kilometers northwest of Moscow, the basements of residential buildings are also equipped with shelters, the independent medium SOTA reports on Telegram (see below).
The authorities in the city of Novokuznetsk, where bomb shelters and associated signs have now also appeared, were particularly cautious. Local officials said the city needed bomb shelters “in case of a possible threat of war,” according to Mediazona. Novokuznetsk is located in the south of Siberia, more than 3000 kilometers from Ukraine as the crow flies.
