Large-scale action Sunday evening after an illegal explosive device exploded: 31 residents were evacuated from a residential building in Alliogasse by the professional fire brigade due to the initially unclear situation. The explosion shattered 14 windows in the building. Police have cordoned off much of the area.
Around 6:15 p.m., several people called the emergency services. Police patrols, the professional fire brigade and the special task force of the professional rescue service were deployed. A demolition expert and a police dog eventually discovered the remains of fireworks on the sidewalk and parked cars. The blast’s blast wave was so strong that it damaged a total of 14 windows in the apartment building and activated numerous alarm systems in parked cars.
Some people who were taken out of the building were taken care of by the emergency services, but according to the police, no one was injured.
The fireworks may have been an illegal explosive device, police spokeswoman Barbara Gass said. It is still unclear who lit the fireworks. The National Investigation Department is conducting an investigation. The roadblocks were lifted after about two hours.
Prohibited fireworks as a major hazard
The Viennese police explicitly warn against the use of prohibited fireworks and the improper use of fireworks. In particular, igniting fireworks, often purchased from abroad, without the necessary quality and approval criteria, poses a major risk potential. In case of violation of the provisions of the Pyrotechnics Act, the user risks possible criminal consequences and administrative fines of up to 3,600 euros.
