In order to have Good Friday off, everyone has had to take a day off since 2019: three years ago, the holiday for Evangelicals, Methodists and Old Catholics was abolished. In Upper Styria it is still mainly about the evangelical parishes. They demand the day back and take action.
“It is an extremely important day in religion!” Helmut Kern from Upper Styria continues to be hit hard by the fact that Good Friday has not been a public holiday for three years. So he teamed up with the protestant parish of Ramsau am Dachstein to bring it to the fore: “There we hang a banner on the street, and we hang a text in the showcases in Wald am Schoberpass, Mautern and Kalwang.” and his co- campaigners want a “holiday for everyone”.
Protestant Reverend Martina Ahornegger of Ramsau reveals in a written statement why: “Good Friday does not hide what we like to cover up: hardship, guilt, injustice, suffering and death.” Kern thinks it’s not okay for believers to have to take a vacation for that — but it’s also great for non-believers to get a day off.
Public holidays are currently only possible as holidays
For this you currently have to request a personal holiday from your employer at least three months in advance, which in principle must comply with this. Instead, another day can be chosen, which will be deducted from the holiday. “But the consultation about this is disappearing,” says the Styrian Workers Chamber. Three years ago there were many questions.
Kern is convinced that something can be achieved with these actions. He sees a solution in replacing Easter Monday as a day off with Good Friday.
