All Buddhist monks at a Thai temple recently tested positive for the addictive drug methamphetamine and are now in rehab. “The temple has no more monks,” an official in charge of Bung Sam Phan rural district said Tuesday.
Neighbors are now concerned that they will no longer be able to fulfill their religious duties, such as feeding the monks. Therefore, other Buddhist monks would be sent to the temple.
Transit country for drugs from Myanmar
Thailand is an important transit country for the illicit methamphetamine trade. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the drug is manufactured in Myanmar’s restive Shan state and then smuggled into Thailand via Laos.
There, a “meth” pill can be bought on the street for less than 20 baht (about 50 cents). In recent years, authorities in several South Asian countries have repeatedly seized record amounts of methamphetamine.
