Split climate protests – the blockade sent food into the trash

Date:

Some support it, others reject it. The actions of climate activists and environmentalists are making headlines, along with debates about their usefulness. In any case, one of the blockade measures in the past resulted in food going into the bin and thus being wasted – Lijder: the owner of a sole proprietorship.

“I was able to throw 60 sandwiches in the organic waste bin because they could not be delivered on time,” 59-year-old Franz R. tells krone.at. R. is self-employed, runs a one-man business and is his own boss – so he is also responsible for delivering his goods to customers.

The 59-year-old took the post about Monday’s most recent last-generation blockades in Graz, Innsbruck and Linz as an opportunity to describe his experience with activists, which for him ended in expenses and food waste. He was one of many who were caught in traffic in February when Lobau camp in Vienna-Donaustadt was evacuated by police for two hours. He could no longer hand over the goods, which were actually intended for a customer, and had to get rid of them.

“The Way Is Bullshit”
At the same time, the passionate chef emphasizes: “I am absolutely not bothered by the concerns of the demonstrators. I am in favor of the energy transition,” says R., who wants to convert his house and company to solar energy next year and switch to an electric one. car. But the activists’ way of expressing concerns about climate protection is “nonsense”, it hits the wrong people. “Life is always made difficult for the small workers,” says the 59-year-old.

The self-employed person also vented his anger on Twitter. The reactions to his criticism came quickly – and prompted him to delete the tweet a little later. R.: “There was immediate hostility. Any criticism of these actions is immediately acknowledged by ‘climate deniers’ up to and including ‘Nazi’ – I have no idea what that is supposed to mean.”

There is emotionality on both sides, among supporters and opponents of climate action. In any case, the subject of climate change remains worth discussing, but also whether artificially causing traffic jams, stopping planes and wasting food through dumping and blockade actions will lead to a decisive reconsideration.
