In light of power outages caused by Russian missile attacks on power plants and power lines, Ukraine’s Justice Minister Denys Maljuska is warning of an emergency in Ukrainian prisons. “One of our biggest concerns is the situation in prisons. We need electricity and water in the prisons,” Maljuska told German media.
A stress test has shown that security and supplies in the prisons can be maintained without electricity for a week at most. “After a week, supplies, heating and security are at serious risk as the prison also needs electricity for surveillance cameras and other security equipment.”
US offers help
According to an insider, the United States wants to support Ukraine in restoring power. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will offer help Tuesday at a meeting of a new energy coordination group, which will include the G7 and other countries, a US official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.
The Washington government is working with U.S. utilities and hardware suppliers, as well as European countries, to get equipment needed to repair the damaged high-voltage substations “to Ukraine as soon as possible in the coming weeks.”
