The heat death of two police dogs and two other four-legged friends in the Weinviertel after a private jogging session by a service dog handler from the Lower Austria State Police Headquarters has a judicial aftermath.
The public prosecutor in Korneuburg has reported animal abuse against the official, media spokesman Josef Mechtler confirmed Tuesday afternoon in a report by ORF Lower Austria.
Were locked in the car
The dog handler stated that he had health problems on his way home from jogging. The animals – the official’s Belgian shepherd, a colleague’s Malinois shepherd dog and two private four-legged friends – were therefore locked up in the car for a long time, according to the public prosecutor’s office.
Acute cardiovascular failure
The incident happened in mid-August. A pathological finding from the University of Veterinary Medicine then revealed, according to the state police directorate, that the dogs “most likely died of overheating or acute cardiovascular failure (heat stroke).” The civil servant and the colleague have since been assigned to other departments. According to the authority, they would not be used as police dog handlers until further notice.
