United States Senate passed a law on Tuesday to protect same-sex marriage and that protects the legal precedent approved by the Supreme Court in 2015. The bill has been supported by all members of the Democratic bench and by 12 Republicans, who were already in favor of it. All this comes after said court revoked the right to abortion last June.

The bill will repeal the Defense of Marriage Law, passed in 1996, which defined marriage as only between a man and a woman. To this day, several states still have laws banning same-sex marriage.

The Respect Marriage Act must now pass the scrutiny of the House of Representatives before being sent to US President Joe Biden and becoming law. The bill is expected to pass the House of Representatives before the end of the year.
