Seismologists surprised – earthquakes on Euboea were also strongly felt in Athens

Date:

The earthquakes on the island of Euboea have alarmed residents. Seismologists were surprised that the tectonic plates moved so strongly there. The area was previously considered one of the safest in Greece.

“It is a mistake in the direction of Athens,” the head of the Athens Geodynamic Institute told Skai broadcaster on Wednesday. “That’s why the quake (Tuesday evening) was felt so strongly in the capital.” It is unclear whether the main shock is still waiting.

Many slept in cars for fear of earthquakes
Since Tuesday morning, the earth in the region has been shaking again and again, several times with a magnitude between 4.4 and 5. About 80 smaller and larger earthquakes were counted on Wednesday night alone. Many people slept in their cars for fear of new strong earthquakes.

The assessment of the damage began in the morning. No injuries or major damage have been reported so far. People in the area have been advised to avoid old stone farmhouses. Schools remained closed.
