1550 euros per person – activists have to pay costs for police operations

Date:

Four people who were glued to the Ring in central Vienna on the margins of the global climate strike in September must pay for the deployment of personnel and a helicopter. It is about 1550 euros per person. Climate activists of the last generation are furious and criticize the plans of the Vienna police.

The climate activists question the expensive use of the helicopter on September 23. “There was no logical reason for this. Traffic had already been diverted because of the demonstration. The route of the demonstration was not blocked.” More than ten police officers were grounded to the ground in front of each demonstrator: “And that, although the people of the last generation do not defend themselves on principle, do not flee and show their ID on request.” A statement from the Viennese police on the matter was Wednesday afternoon. not yet known.

‘Brought off the tarmac with a special agent’
“The trapped people had to be freed from the tarmac by WEGA forces with a special agent,” reads the ad available to the APA. The traffic monitoring of the “sticking operation”, as the advertisement called it, was carried out by the police helicopter Libelle.

“Was the large-scale helicopter operation ultimately just about driving up costs as high as possible and then using them to intimidate desperate civilians?” the activists wondered.

Police say a helicopter is needed
The Sicherheitswet provides for the billing of operations if individuals are exposed through gross negligence to a hazard affecting their life or health, such as getting stuck on a busy road. According to a statement from the Viennese police on Wednesday afternoon, the entire operation would be charged, not the use of a specific substance. In such situations, the deployment of a helicopter is necessary to assess the overall traffic situation and, in particular, to divert emergency services on duty. According to the executive, that would have been necessary twice on September 23.

Activists want to continue
The group fighting the climate crisis wants to continue resolutely despite the punishment. About 12,000 participants responded to Fridays For Future’s strike call in Vienna in September and took part in the 11th global climate strike.

The activists of the last generation regularly stand aside at the beginning of the week and demand, among other things, 100 km / h on the highways and a ban on new oil and gas drilling. Since then, the protests have spread to other states.
