A mysterious light phenomenon suddenly in the night sky! A large fireball caused commotion in Tyrol last weekend. Two night owls from Münster witnessed the natural spectacle, which is seen on average only about 30 times a year in Central Europe. “It was a little scary.”
Shooting stars are probably nothing out of the ordinary for frequent party animals. The brighter meteors, so-called fireballs, are very rare. “Somehow cool that we’ve now seen and experienced such a phenomenon,” says “Krone’s” Sabrina Zeller.
“At first we thought of a rocket”
The 33-year-old woman from Münster was on her way home from Kramsach with her friend Katrin De Benedetto after visiting a restaurant together on Saturday evening, when suddenly the room tensed and the two women from the Unterland could not believe their eyes. “It was about ten minutes past midnight. Suddenly a neon green ball – about the size of the moon – appeared in the sky and disappeared after a few seconds. It had a kind of tail attached to it,” recalls Zeller.
At first the two women thought of a rocket. “Then we drove on more slowly and looked to see if we could see anything on the fields. But there was nothing,” the 33-year-old clarifies.
The glowing ball almost caused a sleepless night. “Of course we thought about what that was and then came across the fireball phenomenon on the Internet,” the two Tyroleans finally found what they were looking for. “It was a bit foggy at night and therefore almost ghostly,” Zeller laughs.
Photographer in Upper Austria managed to take a spectacular picture
Erwin Filimon of the Salzkammergut Astronomical Working Group at the Gahberg Observatory confirms the sighting of the fireball. “Hermann Koberger, a member of ours, was able to take a picture of it in Fornach in Upper Austria.” It is not yet known whether fragments of the meteor have reached the ground.
