25 tons of poison – dangerous goods carrier paralyzed the highway

Date:

25 tons of glycerin phase kept the emergency services busy for hours on Thursday night on the Innkreisautobahn in Upper Austria. After a serious truck accident, the toxic, corrosive and flammable dangerous goods threatened to escape. The highway was closed in both directions for hours.

A 70-year-old German drove his lorry with a trailer on the A8 Innkreis motorway in the direction of Suben at around 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday. The cargo consisted of 25 tons of glycerin phase (dangerous goods, flammable, toxic, corrosive). At Meggenhofen, the 70-year-old suddenly left the road on the right, drove a few meters through the ditch, crashed into a stone embankment and then came to a stop along it.

Fuel tank ruptured
The seriously injured man was trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed by firefighters. After the first aid from the emergency doctor, he was admitted to the Wels Clinic. The vehicle was heavily damaged, but no hazardous substances escaped from the tank trailer. Only the fuel tank was torn open and the diesel fuel leaked into the ground. Due to the high level of danger of the hazardous substances, the direction of Suben was completely closed to traffic.

Dangerous goods pumped
A diversion has been set up via the Pichl bei Wels exit. The hazardous substances had to be pumped out of the damaged tank trailer before they could be recovered. The Graz track had to be closed for several hours for this. By order of the journal service of the BH Grieskirchen, the contaminated soil will be removed tomorrow morning.

The fire brigade of the city of Wels, Geisensheim, Pichl bei Wels and Krenglbach, as well as four patrols from the Wels Police Inspectorate (API) and three patrols from the Ried API were deployed to the scene of the accident.
