Howling in the creek – orphaned baby otter rescued in Lower Austria

Date:

An orphaned baby otter was rescued by a hiker in Bad Pirawarth in Lower Austria. The woman had discovered the loudly crying young animal in a stream and informed the responsible hunt manager.

He took the otter to a vet, who in turn took it to an owl and bird of prey rescue center (EGS) in Haringsee. The animal called “Rudi” is now being cared for there, it reported in a broadcast on Thursday.

Only weighed a kilo when taken over
“Rudi was extremely exhausted and very hungry. He immediately took the bottle with the puppy milk and drank it well,” says veterinarian Hans Frey, scientific director of EGS Haringsee. The animal weighed only one kilo when it was taken over, but has now gained 250 grams. has come, it must be released into the wild.

Why the baby animal was only discovered on November 22 can only be guessed. There is a construction site a short distance from where it was found. Normally, female otters give birth to two to three babies per litter. “Possibly the mother wanted to leave the construction site with her boys and Rudi lost in the process. And maybe she didn’t dare go back,” says Frey.
