Dramatic scenes in the center of Amsterdam: on Tuesday afternoon a car exploded in front of the national monument in Damplatz and then went up in flames. The driver, a 50-year-old Dutch from Noord-Holland, was injured and was later arrested by the police. The authorities assume a deliberate action.
Around 1.30 pm a small red car drove slowly to the dam space and stopped in the immediate vicinity of the monument. A few seconds later there was an explosion, while the driver was still in the vehicle.
According to the reports of eyewitnesses, the man himself stepped out of the burning wreck – his clothes were on fire. Treated police officers could suffocate the fire with foam extinguishers. The man was taken to the hospital with injuries and arrested there.
Muke in a large scale
The police blocked the Dam-Platz, the traffic was diverted and lines 4 and 14 trams no longer stop at the affected stops. Explosives experts from the Dutch army (EOD) were consulted to investigate the vehicle for possible further explosion materials.
Connection with earlier attack?
The incident took place only a few days after a knife attack at almost the same place. A 30-year-old Ukrainian had stabbed passers-by and injured five people. He was arrested for attempted murder or murder with a terrorist motive.
It is currently not known whether there is a connection between the two actions. The investigation into the cause of the explosion is active. The police want to quickly announce further information.
