At least 12 people have been killed in an attack by a criminal gang on the town of Source-Matelas, north of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The perpetrators broke into the Cabaret district, killed several residents and set fire to houses, the newspaper “Le Nouvelliste” reported on Wednesday (local time), citing the city authorities.
“The bandits have shown unparalleled brutality. Some of the bodies have been charred,” said Mayor Joseph Jeanson Guillaume. Police had previously driven the gang members from the area.
Tens of thousands on the run
Haiti threatens to sink further and further into chaos. Rival gangs have been vying for control of the greater Port-au-Prince area for over a year. Tens of thousands of people have had to flee their homes because of the escalating violence.
The fighting also exacerbates the already precarious supply situation in the bitterly poor Caribbean country. The caretaker government asked the United Nations for help through an armed international force.
