Warnings issued – UK sewerage companies pollute waterways

Date:

Pollution warnings have been issued for a number of beaches in England and Wales. The reason for this is a few sewage companies whose monitoring systems do not work or do not work as intended.

About a quarter of all sewage was discharged unchecked last year, opposition Liberal Democrats said Monday evening. Popular seaside bathing beaches, lakes and rivers are affected. According to data from the Environment Agency, many systems used by sewage companies that are supposed to control wastewater discharges are not working or not installed as intended.

Environmental spokesperson: ‘Government does not show up’
Pollution warnings have recently been issued for a number of beaches in England and Wales. “British seaside resorts are being flooded with polluted sewage, but the government is not showing up,” said Tim Farron, environmental spokesman for the Liberal Democrats. This is a national scandal, the new numbers would stink of “cover up”.

Government: action taken
Stanley Johnson, environmentalist and father of outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson, also criticized the British government for not holding companies accountable enough. The opposition Labor party had previously announced that the amount of untreated sewage has increased nearly 30-fold between 2016 and 2021. The government said measures had been taken to solve the problem and improve water quality.

Most of the companies involved initially did not comment on the waste water situation. An Anglian Water spokesperson said the company had spent hundreds of millions of pounds. One hundred million pounds is equal to 117.73 million euros.
