After much consideration, Kompatscher wants to stay and participate in the South Tyrolean LH

Date:

The South Tyrolean governor Arno Kompatscher (SVP) wants to run again next year as the leader of the South Tyrolean People’s Party in the state elections. He writes this in a letter to the party. The decision was preceded by a long period of reflection and speculation as to whether Kompatscher would return.

“The accusation that my supposed ‘doubt’ would harm our party leads me to contact you before the exam now scheduled for December 17 and to share with you my view of the current state of affairs” , he wrote to his party colleagues. A wide range of support and appreciation has now persuaded him to “continue on this path and apply again for nomination as the top candidate of the South Tyrolean People’s Party,” the report said.

Kompatscher divides powerfully
Kompatscher also wrote that he had seriously considered not seeking re-election: “The misbehavior of individuals, but especially the public slander in this context, had actually fueled my doubts as to whether it made sense to run for re-election. It is possible”. It makes little sense “to compete as a top candidate in a team that, as was the case recently, works more against each other than with each other,” says Kompatscher. The 51-year-old stated that the “methods in our group have been hurting themselves a lot lately”.

The award of bus concessions put Kompatscher under great pressure
Kompatscher – whose party had come under considerable pressure in the course of the so-called SAD affair surrounding the award of bus concessions – had previously set conditions for his re-candidate. Kompatscher had demanded that the incidents surrounding the same affair be dealt with. However, this was only partially successful and took a long time.

He then set conditions for the establishment of the SVP candidate list for the state elections. He was given veto power if he disagreed with a candidate. Kompatscher probably wanted to avoid belonging to a minority within the SVP faction, as has happened several times in the current legislature.

Election autumn 2023
At the Dec. 17 closed conference — which was actually scheduled for Saturday and Kompatscher’s decision was also expected — he now wanted to “set the course” for the fall 2023 election, he said. Should Kompatscher become governor again after the election, it would be his third term. However, when he first took office in 2014, he said he would only be available for two legislative terms.
