Not only food and goods for people are currently becoming more expensive, inflation is also noticeable in products for four-legged friends. The costs for accessories and feed have been rising sharply for months, but keeping them is also becoming increasingly expensive – especially for certain animals.
The rise in prices does not stop with food for our four-legged friends, on the contrary. “Monthly price increases are very strong, sometimes even higher than inflation,” says a pet supply store in Innsbruck. The prices of the specialist trade in particular have risen sharply, which is particularly noticeable for feed containing meat. “It only adds up over time”, the trader believes that rising feed prices are currently the biggest problem.
The retail chain Fressnapf reports an increasing demand in its stores, because some products are not available in supermarkets. This can lead to bottlenecks in the short term. The dealer from Innsbruck also confirms that the demand is still there. But many customers who would have bought the same products for years would look for cheaper alternatives. The biggest savings are made on toys and other pet accessories. “Things that have batteries or technology installed in them have gone up in price.”
Fish farming in particular became more expensive
But the animals themselves and keeping them are now becoming much more expensive: breeders are becoming rarer, the pet store explains. This is also due to the rise in prices: “You see that mainly with fish at the moment. Aquariums are much more expensive due to increased electricity costs.” The situation is not so bad, but similar for reptiles that need their terrarium.
