Ibrahim Dogan from Bregenz has been delivering newspapers for the “Krone” for 25 years. He is convinced that work keeps you young.
It is ten o’clock in the morning when I meet Ibrahim Dogan from Bregenz. In two hours his shift will start again in a textile company in Hard. He works there five days a week. And that for 27 years. A loyal and reliable employee, that is what almost inevitably comes to mind. On weekends he is also on the road for almost as long as a delivery driver of the “Krone”.
His tour covers part of Dornbirn. Namely Kastenlangen, Sulphur, Rohrbach and the area around the exhibition center. That means 86 stops for the agile man. “At 2:30 am I drive to the Hohenems base, which I also manage, first prepare the ride sheets, cash registers, newspapers, etc. for the other drivers and then go on my own,” reports Dogan. He knows his tour like the back of his hand, he says. That is not surprising, because he has been driving the route almost since he started working as a delivery driver.
Happy when a job is done
In about three hours, all 86 “silent sellers” are set up, provided with newspapers, and the Sunday morning work is done before collection resumes at 5 p.m. “I’m not rich,” jokes Ibrahim Dogan. “But I feel good when I make something. That makes me happy.” There is therefore no question of lying around in retirement, says the sinewy man, who does not know what to do with this ‘newfangled work-life balance’. Especially since he’s divorced and the kids have left home. Still, he has a vision: “With the money from delivering the newspaper, I would like to buy a house in Turkey when I retire and spend more time there.”
