The numbers are falling – will China soon overturn its zero-Covid strategy?

Date:

Mass protests and a falling number of infections – but China still sticks to its zero-Covid strategy and sometimes uses force to enforce it. But according to a report, the strict measures could soon be undermined.

As the virus weakened, conditions improved to downgrade Covid-19 as a serious infectious disease, China’s state news agency Yicai reported late Sunday. More than 95 percent of cases in China are now asymptomatic and mild, and the fatality rate is very low.

Covid-19 may be downgraded soon
Under these circumstances, sticking to the classification of the virus does not correspond to scientific knowledge, Yicai quotes an infectious disease expert while maintaining anonymity. Corona could therefore be relegated to category B or even category C.

Since January 2020, the infectious disease in China has been classified as category B, but is managed according to category A protocols. Based on this, China can enforce its zero corona policy with the strict measures.

Category A diseases in China include bubonic plague and cholera, while SARS, AIDS and anthrax fall under category B. Category C includes influenza, leprosy and mumps, among others. Any adjustment to the classification of infectious diseases by the National Health Commission, China’s top health authority, requires the approval of the State Council or Cabinet.

The number of infections continues to fall
Meanwhile, the number of daily new coronavirus infections in China continues to fall. The country registered 30,014 new infections, according to the National Health Commission. The day before that was 31,824. 4,213 of the cases are symptomatic and 27,611 are asymptomatic infections, which are counted separately in China. The country has reported no new deaths from the virus in the past 24 hours, up from two the day before.
