Harry Potter fans and coin collectors can rejoice: The British Mint is issuing a series of coins with motifs from popular children’s and youth books. The first of a total of four collector coins was awarded on Monday.
The 50 pence coin features the Hogwarts Express steam train on one side and the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the other.
The coins will be available in a variety of designs, some coloured, some gold, ranging in price from £11 (EUR 12.81) to £5,215. The occasion is the 25th anniversary of the publication of the first Harry Potter volume.
The monarch, who died in September, appears on two of the four coins in the series. On the other two, the portrait of their son and successor, King Charles III. (74) are displayed.
A change of portrait within a series is rare, so the coins are expected to be in high demand, said Rebecca Morgan, head of the Royal Mint. According to the report, other coins will also feature motifs featuring the wizard Harry Potter, the Hogwarts school of wizardry and its head Professor Dumbledore.
