The UN is providing $100 million (€91.93 million) to help fight starvation in Yemen and several African countries threatened by the war in Ukraine. “The effects of the conflict in Ukraine threaten to push millions of people even closer to starvation,” the UN said on Thursday.
Of the total, 14 million will go to Somalia, 12 million to Ethiopia, 4 million to Kenya, 20 million to Sudan, 15 million to South Sudan, 15 million to Nigeria and 20 million to Yemen. UN aid agencies must use the money to buy food and other urgently needed goods.
UN funds to “save lives”
The emergency aid “will save lives,” said Martin Griffiths, United Nations deputy secretary-general for humanitarian affairs. “Hundreds of thousands of children go to bed hungry every night, while their parents worry about how to feed them. A war on the other side of the world makes their prospects even worse,” he warned.
War in Ukraine affects world hunger
Ukraine and Russia are among the main grain suppliers for many developing countries. After the war broke out, food prices on the world market skyrocketed. Russia itself has repeatedly denied that its attack on the neighboring country could lead to global famine.
